The active part of the plant is the rhizome.

It is considered to be anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It reinforces the immune system, with possible anti-cancer properties.

It is anti-sclerotic as well as antithrombotic and anti-arthritic.

It is also antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal.

It protects us against age-related cataracts.

It increases secretion of bile salts.

It increases the solubility of bile and the secretion of cholesterol and bilirubin (bilirubin elevated levels may indicate certain diseases).

Consumption of turmeric is very safe. It is better to be taken with food.

Those who have blocked gallbladder bile stones should consult their doctor. Those who are on anticoagulants and antithrombotic (substances that stops blood clotting) medication should notify their physician.

It’s important, though, to mention the disadvantage of turmeric’s absorption by the body.

There are several ways to increase the levels of absorptivity. A common way to achieve  it is by consuming turmeric simultaneously with hot pepper (preferably cayenne). There are many products of turmeric supplements  in the market but we must be very careful in our choice as not all of them are effective.
